School, work, sleep, repeat

There it is! Summer is coming to an end, school and work are back on the schedule! Long days spent lying in the sun and vacationing are done with. For students, this means having to go back to school, homework slowly piling up, and mid semester is already just around the corner! For parents, the homework, lunch preparation, and hurried morning routine is resuming. However, not everyone react the same to changes. For most people, it is an additional source of stress for which solutions are not always that obvious!

Understand how stress affects us

First and foremost, we need to understand that stress has several negative effects on our health. Stress contributes to elevating your heart beat and blood pressure, which in turn increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Acne, hair loss and increase of cortisol can also be observed in some people. To that list, digestive problems, decrease of the immune system, and weight loss can be added. Finally, stress also contributes to increased sleep issues, and could cause memory loss. All these examples are only a few of the consequences of stress. Thus, it is important to react speedily to take control and regain peace of mind.

What should you do to reduce stress?

First, learn to control only what you can and make a list of priorities. This will help you establish current state and prepare an action plan to help you get through more complex situations. Then, surround yourself with people who have a positive outlook on life, take advantage of your free time and plan time off for yourself. Exercising will allow you to put aside your worries and centre yourself. Finally, take the time to rest and relax. Even if your schedule appears to be overflowing with things to do, your productivity is not the same if you are exhausted.
