February is heart month. You might well be thinking that we're not telling you anything you don't already know. You're well aware that Valentine's Day, the special day for lovers, is celebrated each year on Feb. 14. What you might not have known, though, is that February is Heart Disease Prevention Month. Being physically active is one of many ways to reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease. The Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends that Canadians integrate physical activity into their everyday lives. It isn't necessary to start intensive training to take advantage of the health benefits: barely 30 minutes of exercise, 2 to 4 times a week, is enough - and every little effort counts, even gardening, housework or dancing with your children. We therefore encourage you, during February and throughout the year, to take good care of your heart, which beats for you and for all those you love. |
